What is how to type square root?

You can type the square root symbol (√) in several ways:

  • Using Alt Codes (Windows): Hold down the Alt key and type 251 on the numeric keypad. Release the Alt key, and the √ symbol will appear. This is dependent on having a numeric keypad. See Alt Codes for more details.

  • Character Map (Windows): Search for "Character Map" in the Windows search bar. Open it, select a font (like Arial), and search for the square root symbol. You can then copy and paste it. See Character Map for details.

  • Copy and Paste: The easiest way is often to copy the symbol from a website or document and paste it into your document.

  • Using LaTeX: In environments that support LaTeX (like many scientific and mathematical documents and online forums), you can type \sqrt{} to represent the square root. The content inside the curly braces {} is the radicand (the value under the square root). See LaTeX for more info.

  • HTML Entity: You can use the HTML entity √ to represent the square root symbol in HTML documents. See HTML Entity.

  • macOS: Press Option + v keys to insert the square root symbol. See MacOS Shortcuts.
